Parent Involvement Program

Family Literacy Action Group

“FLAG” (Family Literacy Action Group) is an important component of Hancock County School’s parent involvement program.  FLAG programs focus on providing parents with information on child development and child rearing.  These programs will also provide practical strategies parents can apply at home to better help their child/children with reading and math skills.

The FLAG program will consist of four evening parent sessions.  Two of these four meetings will be countywide.  The first of these will be our beginning of the year “Kick-Off” meeting.  This meeting will introduce parents to our county’s Title I program.  In addition individual schools will provide packets to parents containing pertinent information about the Title I program (including parent surveys, etc.) in that school.  The second countywide meeting will be our “Summer Send-Off” session.  At this session practical and fun activities for parents and children to share over the summer will be provided.  During the school year two additional meetings will be held locally, each stressing the focus components of FLAG.

The Hancock County Title I staff will coordinate efforts and join talents in designing and implementing the FLAG program, with special attention given to parent concerns and suggestions.  Meeting format will generally provide activities and grouping that involve parents, children, and parents working with their child/children.  Outside presenters may also be included.  Families will share refreshments and be given a free book at each meeting.

The following students/families will be included in our FLAG programs:

  • All Kindergarten students
  • Title I students in grades 1-3
  • Title I tutoring students in grade 4
  • Title I private/parochial students
  • Final meeting- Head Start students registered in Kindergarten for the coming fall.
