3. Research informs us that support for struggling students should be provided as early as possible—when students show the earliest signs of difficulty. One tool that helps predict possible future problems with reading is DIBELS-- Dynamic Inventory of Basic Elementary Literacy Skills. Teachers administer these brief assessments three times a year to all primary students. Kindergarten students who have difficulty isolating the beginning sounds of words and naming letters receive additional focused lessons in small groups.
