Weir Middle School to Infuse Technology with iPad 2 Grant

Educators today are faced with the challenge of improving student achievement, meeting rigorous standards established by the state, and keeping up with technological advances. Thanks to the efforts of 8th grade teacher, Mrs. Jennifier Marchese, Weir Middle School has been awarded the Infusing Technology professional development grant for incorporating the use of an iPad 2 into the classroom.  Mrs. Marchese organized a team of teachers and completed the application process required to be eligible for the grant.

The Infusing Technology professional development builds upon a school-based team learning community.  Participants will learn how to infuse technology into classroom instruction to engage students in critical thinking, reasoning and problem solving skills.  With the principal’s support, these participants will model effective classroom instruction using technology to maximize 21st Century learning experiences for students.

Weir Middle School will be Infusing Technology into its classrooms during the 2011-2012 school year.  The Infusing Technology team of teachers will be trained in July on how to successfully use technology in the classroom to implement content standards in a meaningful way to students.  Team members from WMS include: Joe Paolo, Jennifier Marchese, Alisa Hannah, Amy Porreca, Rikki Javarone, Stacy Slack, Erica Zablackas, and Eric Olson.  Hancock County technology coordinator Jennifer DiGiacinto will also participate in the program.  Team members will work with a mentor throughout the next two school years and receive ongoing professional development.

As part of the grant, Weir Middle School will be receiving an iPad lab for students to use in the classroom.  Each team member will also receive on iPad to use for planning and instruction.  Weir Middle School is excited to participate in the Infusing Technology program.  The teachers look forward to providing students with the latest technology and programs that are relevant to the current national and educational climate.  The team will provide professional development that promotes the schools 21st century learning goals to all staff members in the fall.  The Infusing Technology program will enable Weir Middle School to improve student achievement and motivation through engaging classroom instruction.

WMS does not look at the Infusing Technology program as another initiative to add to their plate.  They see this program as a tool to help meet the needs of their students and a resource to maximize the 21st century learning opportunities they are giving to their students. The team strongly believes that being part of the Infusing Technology program will allow WMS to continue to strive to meet the school’s mission of “Our learning community working together to prepare students for a successful future as life-long learners in the 21st century.”
